Optimizing Media Usage

The process of arranging multiple jobs to reduce the total media usage is called nesting. Also a group of jobs nested together is called nest job.
Nest job can also be automatically created when certain conditions are met. This function is useful when VersaWorks Dual receives jobs from multiple computers via the network.
Follow the procedure below to create a nest job.

Follow the procedure below to select multiple jobs and create a nest job.
  1. Perform one of the following to select multiple job from the job lists:
    • While holding down the Shift key, click the first job, and then click the last job.
    • While holding down the Ctrl key, click the jobs one by one.
    • Drag over multiple jobs.
  2. Click .
    The nest job is created from the selected jobs.
    The name of the nest job will be [Nest Job (date) - (serial number)]. Serial numbers (1, 2...) are assigned according to the creation order.
    E.g., First nest job [Nest Job 10/10-1]
    Second nest job [Nest Job 10/10-2].

Creating a nest job automatically

In [Job Management] of the [Job Settings] window, you can define the conditions to automate the creation of nest jobs (Auto Nesting).
  1. Double-click or .
    The [Queue A (B) Properties] window appears.
  2. Configure the printing settings such as the media and print quality settings.
  3. Click .
  4. In [Action for Incoming Jobs], select the desired conditions, and then enter the values. If you select multiple conditions, a nest job is automatically created when at least one of the selected conditions is met.
    [By Time]
    Jobs are nested in order it is received while monitoring the time. A nest job is only created when the time specified has been reached. RIP and printing processes are not started until the nest job is created. If you select [Set Time Interval], nest jobs are also automatically created according to the specified interval of time. However, the first nest job will be created at the time specified in [By Time].
    [By Paper Length]
    Jobs are nested in order it is received while monitoring the media usage. A nest job is only created when the specified media usage is reached. RIP and printing processes are not started until the nest job is created. Also, you will not be able to preview the state of nesting in the layout window.
    For example if you set [By Paper Length] as 1 m, a nest job is automatically created when the state shown in diagram 2 is achieved. But until the nest job is created, the jobs are listed in order as shown in diagram 1.

    [By Number of Jobs]
    A nest job is automatically when the number of jobs registered into the input folder reaches the specified value.
  5. Click [OK].
  6. Add the jobs to the job list.
    The [Status] field in the job list shows when the job is waiting for the automatic nesting process.
    Nest jobs are automatically created when the conditions are met.
