Printing from the Macintosh Client

Follow the procedure below to operate a Macintosh client to print via the RIP server.
The configuration method varies depending on the operating system used on the RIP server and client.
Refer to the table below to see which setup method applies to the operating system combination of the server and client that you intend to use.

The following is an overview of each setup method.
A
If the operating system of the RIP server is Windows Vista, only clients running Mac OS X 10.5 or later can register the server as a network printer.
Clients running other operating systems cannot register the RIP server as a network printer.
When the client runs Mac OS X 10.5 or later
B
Register the RIP server as a network printer on the client computer.
When the client runs Mac OS X 10.3 or later

Enable the VersaWorks AppleTalk feature on the RIP server, and register the RIP server as an AppleTalk printer on the client computer.
When the client runs Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier
D
You will need a third party a printer sharing software program to print from the client. Please consult the manual that came with your application software for configuration information.
E
If the operating system of the RIP server is Windows Vista, clients that do not run Mac OS X 10.5 cannot register the server as a network printer.

Check the following before operating the printer.

When the client runs Mac OS X 10.5 or later
When the client runs Mac OS X 10.3 or later
When the client runs Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier

When the client runs Mac OS X 10.5 or later

If you register the RIP server as a network printer on the client, you will be able to send the print data to the RIP server. If the RIP server uses Windows Vista, only clients running Mac OS X 10.5 or later can register it as a network printer.
This section explains how to set up the RIP server and the client when the server runs Windows Vista.
If the RIP server runs Windows XP or Windows 2000, see the procedures under When the client runs Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

Step 1: Prepare the RIP server

Configure the settings for processing the printing data received from clients in the [Queue Properties] window.
  1. Double-click or .
    The [Queue A (B) Properties] window appears.
  2. Click , and then select one of the following settings from the [Action for Incoming Jobs] list box.
    Do Nothing
    Neither RIP processing nor printing is performed when a new job is added to the job list.
    RIP and Print
    Both RIP processing and printing are automatically performed when a new job is added to the job list.
    RIP Only
    Only RIP processing is automatically performed when a new job is added to the job list.
  3. Click [OK].

Step 2: Configure the client settings

Follow the procedure below to register the RIP server as a network printer on the client.
  1. Load the Roland VersaWorks DVD-ROM into the DVD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click on the desktop.
  3. Select the [For Macintosh] - [PPD File] - [English] folder, and then copy the [Roland VersaWorks.PPD] file to any location on the computer.
  4. Open [System Preferences] - [Print & Fax].
  5. Click .
  6. Click [Windows]. A list appears immediately below. Select the network group that the computer belongs to from the list.
  7. Select the name of the RIP server's computer from the list.
  8. If you are prompted for user name and password, enter the user name and password for the RIP server, and then click [OK].
  9. Select [RolandVW (nickname of the printer you want to use)] from the list, and then select [Others] from the [Driver] pop-up menu.
  10. Select the PPD file that you copied in step 3, and click [Open].
  11. Click [Add].

Step 3: Start printing

Start printing using an application on the client.
Select [RolandVW (nickname of the printer you want to use)] as the printer.
If [Authentication required] appears in the printer's status indication, click [Resume] and enter the user name and password for the RIP server.

When the client runs Mac OS X 10.3 or later

If you register the RIP server as a network printer on the client, you will be able to send the print data to the RIP server.
This method can be used with the following combinations of RIP server and client operating systems:

Step 3: Start printing

Step 1: Prepare the RIP server

Follow the procedure below to configure the settings for processing the printing data received from clients in the [Queue Properties] window.
  1. Double-click or .
    The [Queue A (B) Properties] window appears.
  2. Click , and then select one of the following settings from the [Action for Incoming Jobs] list box.
    Do Nothing
    Neither RIP nor printing is performed when a new job is added to the job list.
    RIP and Print

Follow the procedure below to register the RIP server as a network printer on the client.
  1. Load the Roland VersaWorks DVD-ROM into the DVD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click on the desktop.
  3. Select the [For Macintosh] - [PPD File] - [English] folder, and then copy the [Roland VersaWorks.PPD] file to any location on the computer.
  4. Select [Applications] - [Utilities] - [Print Setup Utility].
  5. Click [Add].
  6. (When using Mac OS X 10.4)
    Click [More printers].
  7. Select [Windows printing] from the pop-up menu on the top, and then select the network group from the pop-up menu immediately below it.
  8. Select the computer name of the RIP server from the list, and then click [Select].
    If a user name input window appears, enter the RIP server user name and password, and then click [OK].
  9. Select [RolandVW (nickname of the printer you want to use)] from the list, and then select [Others] from the [Printer model] pop-up menu.
  10. Select the PPD file that you copied in step 3, click [Open], and then click [Add].

Start printing using an application on the client.
Be sure to select [RolandVW (nickname of the printer you want to use)] as a printer.

When the client runs Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier

If you register the RIP server as an AppleTalk printer on the client, you will be able to send the print data to the RIP server.
However, before you configure the settings on the client, you must enable the VersaWorks AppleTalk feature on the RIP server.
This method can be used with the following combinations of RIP server and client operating systems:

Step 2: Configure the client settings
Step 3: Start printing


Step 1: Prepare the RIP server

On the RIP server, configure the AppleTalk settings, and then configure the settings for processing the printing data received from clients in the [Queue Properties] window.
Before configuring the settings, make sure that the AppleTalk protocol is installed.
  1. Select [Edit] - [AppleTalk Settings].
    The [AppleTalk Settings] window appears.
  2. Select [Use AppleTalk Service].
  3. Enter the name in [Spooler Name].
    The name entered here is the one that will be displayed on the client. The name should be eight characters or less since your Macintosh computer may not recognize names with more than eight characters.
  4. Configure the following settings in the [Input Settings] area.
    1. Select a nickname for the printer in the [Nick Name] box.
      Although you may have multiple printers connected, you can only configure the Apple Talk Settings for a single printer.
    2. Select the queue folder from the [Input Folder] list.
    The printing data are added to this folder when you perform printing from the Macintosh client.
  5. Click [OK].
    The AppleTalk settings are saved, and the folder selected in step 4 is displayed as .
  6. Double-click the folder icon () for the selected folder.
    The [Queue Properties] window appears.
  7. Click , and then select one of the following settings from the [Action for Incoming Jobs] list box.
    Do Nothing
    Neither RIP nor printing is performed when a new job is added to the job list.
    RIP and Print
    Both RIP and printing are automatically performed when a new job is added to the job list.
    RIP Only
    Only RIP is automatically performed when a new job is added to the job list.
  8. Click [OK].

  1. Load the Roland VersaWorks DVD-ROM into the DVD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click on the desktop.
  3. Select the [For Macintosh] - [PPD File] - [English] folder, and then copy the [Roland VersaWorks.PPD] file to any location on the computer.
  4. Select [Applications] - [Utilities] - [Print Center].
  5. Click [Add].
  6. Select [AppleTalk] from the pop-up menu on the top, and then select the network group from the next pop-up menu.
  7. Select the printer name (spooler name) entered in step 3 of "Step 1: Prepare the RIP server," and then select [Others] from the [Printer model] pop-up menu.
  8. Select the PPD file copied in step 3, click [Open], and then click [Add].

Mac OS 9

  1. Load the Roland VersaWorks DVD-ROM into the DVD-ROM drive.
  2. Double-click on the desktop.
  3. Select the [For Macintosh] - [PPD File] - [English] folder, and then copy the [Roland VersaWorks.PPD] file to the [Extensions] - [Printer Description] folder.
  4. From the Apple menu, select [Chooser].
  5. Click [LaserWriter 8].
  6. Select the printer name (spooler name) you entered in step 3 of "Step 1: Prepare the RIP server."
  7. If the [Select a PostScript Printer Description File] window appears, select [Roland VersaWorks.PPD], and then click [Select].

Step 3: Start printing

Start printing using an application on the client.
Be sure to select the printer name (spooler name) entered in step 3 of "Step 1: Prepare the RIP server."

Tip Changing the Share Name for the Printer

You can change the share name of the printer on the RIP server. If the client is running under Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier, use a share name composed of no more than 12 single-byte characters.
  1. From the [Start] menu, click [Control Panel], then click [Print and Fax].
  2. Select the printer to change, then right-click it.
  3. Click [Sharing].
    The properties window for the printer to change appears.
  4. Click the [Sharing] tab.
  5. Change the [Share name] setting.
    Specify a share name of 12 characters or fewer.
  6. Click [OK].
This completes the share name for the printer.
